Color Workshop – Class 2 – April 15th

Greetings,

If you would like to practice the techniques we learned in class this week – have fun doing the following homework:

To your existing slip stitch sampler cast on enough stitches (a total that is divisible by 4) to comfortably fit on your 16 inch circular so that when you join it in the round the stitches fit easily. Join in the round and knit two rounds in one color. At the beginning of the next round start knitting with another color for one round. At the beginning of the 2nd round of this color practice your jog-less stripe (see below for video review of technique), then knit with this color for a few rounds. Again add another color applying your jog-less stripe technique! Next practice your “easy fair isle knitting” (review technique below) *knit two stitches in one color, knit two stitches in another color* repeat for a few rounds; or pick a pattern of your liking. If you are feeling really comfortable with this, try doing the fair isle knitting with a color in each hand as demonstrated in class. No fair breathing! Your doing it!

The the final class we will review any questions or issues that came up for you while practicing your fair isle knitting. And you will learn how to add color with intarsia. If we have time I will also demonstrate the brioche stitch with two colors and entrelac. Let me know if there are any other techniques you would like me to preview!

More color, enjoy, Jessica

Beginning Knitting – Week 2

Greeting Beginning Knitters,

I just wanted to say again how nice it is to assist you in the process of building your knitting skills. To glance over to see one of you quietly purling, another confidently doing a long tail cast-on, another beginning to “read” the stitches rolling off her needles, and more. Very exciting.

In class this week we reviewed the long tail cast-on; why and how the fabric is seemingly growing wider – this has to do with how you are knitting the first stitch on each row – remember to allow the yarn to dangle in front; how to orient yourself correctly when you come back to your knitting mid-row; short rows, etc. We also discussed the basic requirements for one’s favorite knitting “space”.

We practiced purling and I demonstrated casting off knit-wise.

For those who have signed up for Beginning Knitting Part II on Saturdays, April 23rd and 30th, 12 noon – 2 pm:

We will continue practicing the fundamentals including an introduction to reading patterns, fixing the most common knitting mistakes, adding stripes and  “1st projects”  you can now do!

Again, feel free to contact me with any questions.

Hats, Hats, and More Hats Class – Week 1

Greetings,

Well, we are all working on the Side Slip Cloche from the book Boutique Knits! It’s chock-full of new knitting techniques and at the end you will all have a gorgeous hat to wear!

Seen here  Ravelry: Side slip cloche pattern by Laura Irwin Again, have fun looking at the variety of fibers people have knit this hat pattern up in.

This week we are knitting the large ruffle and the small ruffle. You can stop there (but please knit on if it suits you!) and in week 2 of class you will join the ruffles together with a SET UP that is similar to a 3 needle bind-off. See below for video demonstrating this technique.

YouTube – Three Needle Bind Off

A general question about how to bind-off came up in class – here is a video to demonstrate this technique, and I will follow-up in class with this as well –  YouTube – HOW TO KNIT: BINDING OFF KNIT VIDEO
